nice work slim. much truer skin tone on this one than on your previous digitally coloured pieces. did you make any changes to your usual process?

Hey JC, I think you are at a skill level when things can get real subtle. You have a lot right on where most people would miss. My suggestion? Draw some skulls! Get to know the underlying anatomy, that has helped me so much! You will find that a basis in reality can really help your caricatures! Look more closely at his jawline, I would try that line again. I would pull those little lines that extend from the mouth in a little. I would rework the ears a little and he needs more of a head on top (add a few inches of head on top and add the hair back on) I think the likeness will pop out if you play with those little things. Have fun!

hey slim! wow!! your technique on this is fantastic!!!!amazing. i personally would have made his ears stick out more and have his face not quite as thin. he's a hard one to exaggerate though! one LITTLE thing that i would maybe change is, getting really picky here, that his clothes seem to be the same color, but just darkened in some places.great job on the eyes and the coloring/shading!

Thanks Jong! As for the clothes...in the photo I used he's wearing a monochrome suit (they were big a few years back) dark purple tie on a dark purple shirt and a dark purple blazer. So yes, it's just dark purple laid on top of my value study. I am very eager to see yours, I really love your pencil technique! Do you see what I mean now about "sculptural"? Your pencils look like photographs taken with one of those high glamor fuzzy filters. Mine are more in high focus. Do you ever color yours?

i think i get what you mean with sculptural now. yeah, i do some colored work sometimes... mostly colored pencil, but it's been a while. even though i like colored pieces, i sometimes prefer normal pencil. depends on the subject. right now i'm working on a colored pencil piece. i hope to get around to learning how to paint and how to use pastels as well. there's so many things to learn!
