let me jump in here and state for the record my love of Comments and Critique. sometimes the best medicine tastes the worst... although in an online forum, or in email, where there is always the chance of misreading an critique as a hostile attack I think the Critique Sandwich is the best approach. If anyone wishes to give me the benefit of their eyes in any of my postings, I will always be appreciative, ( I may not agree, but I will be thankful you took the time) with this in mind, I will post the link to the pic from which i drew my challenge ( I think this is a great way to see where people made certain choices) www.imdb.com/gallery/granitz/0459-car/davis_ge.ena?path=pgallery&path_key=Davis,%20Geena Cheers, Rob

While not a participant of this challenge (I hope to get in on the next one), I have enjoyed the exchanges.
Again, this is what a forum like this one is all about. Great stuff from everyone!

My Challenge was to do a caricature of Norman Rockwell. Here's the reference photo and here's my shot.... Mikey, thanks for a fun and challenging challenge....I really enjoyed it. Though I don't think I captured a good likeness. I'm really bad at caricatures. But, I know that the more I do the better I'll get....so on to the next challenge. Please, comments, feedback, and suggestions are welcomed. thanks, rico

Not that it has anything to do with caricature, but Geena didn't almost bankrupt anyone with cutthroat island. Not that it wasn't a flop, but the person who should be blamed for that one was her(soon to be) ex-husband who created the entire scenario of the movie to bring to life a strange domination fantasy with his wife. He even forced her to do her own stunts...anyway, back to caricatures...

Rico - Thanks for the Caricature Challenge.
I look at your drawings like Clint that shows very good and confident lines, very good value contrast. Your portrait of Jennifer ... Super! very good likeness and features are well placed and others! However I think this one doesn't come up to what you are capable of.
I know I do that also! I look back on some of my earlier post and I am very disappointed with myself. That can either help you or hurt you depending upon how you go from there. I choose to study the works of some of the greats, practice, draw, draw, draw.
I hope you take this as I mean it ... to encourage and help you. I see an incredible amount of potential in you when I see the intensity that you approach some of your work with! Thanks again for the post!
Mikey

Hi Mikey, thanks. I know that I missed the mark on this one. I didn't feel confident doing this one. Norman Rockwell is one of my idols - someone I consider a great in American Illustration. I wanted this to be a tribute caricature to him. I felt that I kept missing "something" I rushed through it. I admit not having as much confident doing caricatures as I do doing portraits. I'm guilty of wanting to do caricatures in 2 - 5 minutes like I see so many great caricature artists do at amusement parks and parties and like so many in this wonderful group. What I forgot was that these great artists have been doing this for years and have sharpened their skills to a point where they've mastered the caricature. When I was a baby, I was accused of wanting to run before learning to walk. I'm hoping to learn a lot about caricature and drawing here. I'd like to try this again not as part of the challenge but just as a practice and will post it in the Caricatures section. I also want to "study" some of the great caricatures done here and other sites. Oh, you know, it's funny - when I look at this again, I sort of see Prince Charles.....hehehe Sorry this is so long. Rico

etilander - You're right, of course. I'm sorry. I was just in something of a funk when I wrote that. Sorry, everybody. Sorry, Geena; I don't hold you responsible. -- Eric

Well I don't know if I should post this, but I took a challenge and so I will post. Larry had me choose colored pencil and to do Jimi Hendrix. This is my first colored pencil drawing! I am at a lost as to use them. but I have been wanting to try. Maybe I will try again when I have more time. I started the sketch with a photo on the web but then I lost it! So this is from a few different photos. I would enjoy some input. I have not have time to read all the posting here, looks like there has been alot of posting. Mike N.

Mike, thanks for tackling my challenge and doing a good job with it. Hendrix was a very colorful guy (appearance wise) and you captured that well. The likeness, while not spot on, is good, and coupled with the other cues (bandana, right-handed guitar strung left-handed and played left-handed, rock n roller clothing of that time) there is no doubt who it is. Nice job Mike!

Yes. I sent a blank Im by accident then followed it up with one that had details in it. I believe it was gloria gaynor in charcoal pencils.
Don, i'm still yet you complete your challenge been busy lately, could be another week or so before I get enough spare time.

thank you, birdy, I appreciate the compliment from someone I consider a truly amazing caricaturist. Can I throw my two cents in on the pop culture thing? I just need to explain that the whole Star Wars/Star Trek thing...it's a "guy" thing, if I can be so general. I don't know too many women who appreciate those movies. I don't, for sure. Always thought the idea of women in space wearing minis and stiletto boots was not only ridiculous, but sexist, too. All that stuff about this future being so egalitarian and utopian...sure, as long as you're the man! The women get to run around wearing dominatrix outfits and falling in love with the fat captain(I'm embarrassed to say that William Shatner is Canadian...) And Star Wars...I saw the first movie when it first came out. I don't care what anyone claims (that would be you, Mr.Lucas), it's obvious that Luke and Leia were hot for each other, and then later, the story about being twins was written in...but ewww! Han Solo was always the better-looking one anyway. I don't like all that extra stuff that was edited in...I don't think it made the movies better at all. It just made them look obviously edited! There's something to be said for naivete and rawness of those early science fiction movies. (And George, I will never forgive you for the Howard the Duck debacle!)
