sorry, erik. while i wouldn't say there is NO resemblance here, i don't think it really works overall. i am a huge bowie fan, and i'm assuming the reference picture is the cover of his heathen album? i think you've got it from the top of the head down to about just under his eyes. the way i see bowie, his nose slants more up at the bottom rather than hooking down the way you've got it here. and he has more of an overbite than an underbite. i agree though that pictures of him smiling seem to be hard to find, which is a shame because those teeth really are his most distinguishing feature. you did get his long, thin face, though, and the sharp cheekbones. and as always, i like the inking and colouring style.

Hi Don. Good eye. It actually wasn't the picture from the album, but it was the same photo session. In the picture I used, he's looking down a bit more. And as for the nose, it wasn't looking right at all when drew it using that as a reference, so I looked at a Labyrinth picture, and somehow if you look at those, his nose is different(very straight, skinny and pointy)...I don't know how you change a nose for a movie, but have a look. I am already working on a second Bowie(still no smile pictures though, dammit), and we'll see how this one goes. Thanks to everyone for the comments, and my second attempt will be up here soon, so again, feel free to tell me if it sucks.
Erik.

Grant - it may not be a complete success, but it's not a complete failure either. There is a slight likenes there and I do like your marker work (too bad they are drying up).

I haven't coloured it yet, but here is my second attempt at drawing Bowie. Please be as critical as you want. Erik.

Hi, everyone! been missing this board for the last week. I was back home, celebrating Thanksgiving. Lifedoesn'timitate, I just finished the sketch of Debra for my challenge, I will finish it soon and post. Courtius, I love the Tank Girl! that is by far, my favourite movie, and I love your interpretation of Lori Petty. Thanks for doing that for me! ;D

Erik - I think you got a better likeness with this one. I love how you did the eyes!

erik-
the good: definitely a much closer likeness this time. you got the eyes right for sure, and i think the nose. and as far as exaggeration goes, i like the way the top half of his head is about twice as wide as the lower face! and as always, i like your inking job. i don't know whether this is intentional, but your inking always kind of brings to mind the common style found in comic books of the seventies and early eighties.
the bad: although you were able to find a smiling photo this time, i think the mouth is where the likeness is lost on this one for me. wrong shape or something-- i'm not quite sure.
the ugly: bowie. bowie is ugly.

Here's my challenge, from lifedoesn'timitate. it's debra wilson, from madtv, who just happens to be one of my favourite comedians. so it was fun to draw, and a bit of a challenge, too, i might add...i don't get the opportunity to draw many african-american faces, so i enjoyed the challenge of blending some new colours to get the flesh tones right. this is colour pencil, which i like using, and i like the blendability of them as well.

Okay, Don, about the Bowie drawing, just the mouth itself, or everything from the lower cheekline down? Is the chin still Bowie? Just wondering what I should scrap, and what I should salvage. Thanks.
And anyone else with comments, keep them coming. Bowie may not be my white whale, but he's certainly turning into an elusive tuna.
Erik.

erik, i think it's just the mouth, but altering it will probably also alter the expression lines and maybe the shape of the lower face a little. also, bowie's got really bad teeth (again, finding pictures to show that is difficult, but...). they kind of jut forward and the spaces between them are more noticeable. not huge gaps, but definite lines clear up to the gums (actually, he seems to have had this corrected in recent years, maybe he's old enough to have just gotten dentures, but your drawing appears to be from the era of his "earthling" album-- late 90s-- so his teeth would still have been all out of whack. besides, they're more fun to draw that way).

This is the most interesting thing ive had to draw in my life. And could have been really really great had I been able to draw guns, bodies and chimps. None the less here it is: For those that cant guess, its Jackson as Rambo
