ok, I can see it now (think your server was down for a few mins). very nice Don, but I think the likeness is a bit off. I would say the eyes arent quite right. His left eye should be bigger than the right as far as I know. The rest looks great, you really nailed the ears and mouth ;D Very interesting your comments regarding not doing politicians. I've seen other commentaries about having to have a certain sympathy for a person in order to be able to caricature them, otherwise your heart is just not in it. Thanks for doing the challenge Don. Now I've still got to finish mine - Court asked me to do Samuel L.Jackson, and I am really struggling with it.. already started it 3 or 4 times but I just cant get it to work. Mark stop the presses! I just showed your caricature to my wife, and she said directly that it's Tony Blair - so the likeness cant be far off. I asked her why she recognised him and she said "I think its the eyes" She always shoots me down ;D M.

Okay, here is my submission for this member to member challenge. I was asked to do Eddie Murphy in marker and prisma colors. Ugh! I am very not happy with this. I guess it's true what they say: you are your harshest critic. However, this one I honestly don't think I'd be able to tell who it was if it wasn't named. First of all, I have a brand new appreciation for being supplied with photo references. It was very hard to find a reference of him with a look that I wanted. I wanted the essential Eddie Murphy expression that he has when he's laughing that trademark laugh. I could not find that anywhere. Finally I had to settle with the cover picture of "Another 48 Hours," which I own. Anyway, I don't really like it, but here's the thing. I love these member to member challenges even more than I ever thought I would. There's something truly refreshing about having to do something that you probably wouldn't choose to do on your own. For instance, I rarely use my Art Stix, and now I have.I don't think I've ever done anyone who wasn't Caucasian, and now I have. That's great!! Also, it's very exciting knowing that you HAVE to post your finished piece. Even if you don't really like it, everybody knows you signed up for this and they expect something from you. That really helps me get over my nervousness about work I don't like. Okay, all that aside, please feel free to comment on this. I really do appreciate constructive feedback. Also, if anybody wants to post a decent pic of Eddie, plese do; I may give him another shot. And if anybody wants to give him a shot as well, please feel free. Thanks. --Eric

I think you did a pretty good job on Eddie. I could tell who it was before I scrolled past the top of his head. I'm glad you like the challenge.

Hi all, Court asked me to do Samuel L Jackson in Pencil. Now, I found him really tough to do, and I must have started him over a dozen times before I got this, and thats why it took so long. I still think its not quite right. Hope u like Mark

you definitely got the hat, and the eyes right. maybe the face is a bit round. i think samuel has a longer face than that.

Mark, Samuel L. Jackson IS tough. He has always eluded me as well. That's why I chose him. He has such interesting facial geometry. There are not many like him. Your drawing of him is well-structured, but the likeness is off. And your lines/creases on the face seem a bit stylized, not quite realistic. Sometimes, when I don't feel like I am getting a good caricature, I will stop and do a traditional portrait of the subject. I will spend a good couple hours studying a face and it's anatomy by just drawing it "properly". At the end of that portrait, his likeness and features are sort of burned into my memory, and I can quickly whip out a nice accurate caricature of the person. In my atelier life drawing classes, if I have time at the end, I will spend it by doing a caricature of the model. Here is such an example:

Mark - I've never tried Samuel J., because he looked tough. I think you made a good attempt at him.
Court - You do inspiring work!

Well, Here is Stoontoon's request for a Tank Girl. I haven't seen the movie, but I found a good screenshot of her from the movie to work from. The request was to complete the sketch in ink and whatever coloring method I preferred. So I drew directly with a Zebra ball point pen (added a little white color pencil) in my grey toned little spiral bound sketchbook. At this point, I liked the original sketch so much that I didn't want to mess with the original anymore, so I took the drawing into Painter and did a translucent layer of Conte Stick over the drawing for the color treatment. Overall, I treated it as just a caricature study, and not an illustration, so I'm afraid my coloring job is a little half-assed. Both versions are shown here.
