Do you call yourself an artist? At what point does a person go from being someone interested in drawing to an artist? I consider myself someone interested in art, not an artist. Some day I hope to be one though

i consider my self a cartoonist.I do not want to be an artist.I admire everyone who can do portraits, landscapes etc.I have never had an interest in anything but cartooning.I love cartooning, and getting to love doing caricatures. But i have never felt the need to try other forms of art.

Webster defines an artist as: inflamation of a joint... must be one of those things Cheech and chong smokes.........Just joking that is the definition of arthritis...
Artist-One who pursues a pictorial art. esp. a painter. I had to paint a wall one time at work several years ago when things were real slow. Does that count...?

Wow Scott, I never knew you were a comedian!
tooned - you don't see a cartoonist as being a type of artist? I have never really thought about it until now.

Is a caricaturist an type of artist?
I'm not looking for a debate here, I am just curious as to what everyone's thinking is on the subject. I have heard several very good artists say they are not yet an artist because they can't demand 1,000s of dollars for their work.

i think an artist is someone that can, amaze someone else with what you can put onto paper, from whats inside your head, like not a copy, but your own view. so when you do a caricature, it must be art, cause your taking someones face, and then puttin the way you view it onto paper, even if you exaggerate it. sorry if i aint makin sense, but thats how i see it! lol

i work in an art gallery, and i'm surrounded by many different types of artists. i've struggled with that definition, too, because i'm primarily a cartoonist, and i've dabbled in portraiture. never made big money, though. however, i would say that isn't what defines an artist. i think an artist is defined by their vision, as jadachris said. our vision is unique, no one else can recreate it. it's not limited to landscape, or portraits, or caricature, or sculpture. i've seen great work at the gallery, and i've seen crap. i have to tell ya, some of the "artists" i've seen make me really wonder what's going on in their heads. and when i work with kids, i'm amazed that they can so freely put their vision on paper, and they have a different perspective, and they're okay with that. tooned has a point, though, that cartoonists haven't always been considered as real artists. i come up against that attitude constantly. i will likely never see an exhibit about caricature, or comics, because it's not considered valid. by that, i mean, cartoonists don't have the education and training that other artists have, so galleries see it as doodles, not art. i consider myself more of an artist than some of the people i've had to talk about at the gallery, because their vision is so limited. an artist, to me, is an individual who attempts to capture their vision in some form, and who constantly strives to learn more about their vision and expression.

I was just scanning through some older topics of discussion and came upon this one. Sorry for addressing possibly long-forgotten topics, but my understanding is that everything here is more or less open ended, so here goes.
I personally consider myself an artist, but not the way you intended it, toonMom. I don't think anyone on the site knows this about me, but I am actually an actor.
I haven't really done anything that people would have seen (mostly background work and stage), but I still do consider myself an actor. Why? Well, because I am passionate about it. It's one of only two things that I can see myself doing for the rest of my life and feel fulfilled and content at the end of every day I do it.
I struggle with my craft. I aspire always to better myself. I learn from others. I absorb all that I can from every resource available to me.
My biggest dream is simply to move somebody with a performance. To be seen by somebody and have that person cry or laugh or love me or hate me or disregard me or anything. Because that's what actors do. We emote and hope with all that we are that by our emoting, we might invoke emotions in others.
At least that's the way I see it. And since that's my perception of it, and that's what I do and strive to keep doing, I therefore am an actor.
So, I therefore am an artist, since acting is an art. But that was not what your question meant. For me, caricaturing is a hobby that I am constantly working on, but I'm not passionate about it.
I think what you need to do is ask yourself what an artist is for you. What does it mean for you? Does it mean simply "one who pursues a pictoral art. esp. a painter"? Or does it mean someone who is passionate about art and regardless of whether or not they get paid, will continue doing it because of the indescribable love they have for it? That's what it means for me.
If you can answer the question of what it means for you -- not what a dictionary or anyone else says it is -- then all you need to do is ask yourself if you fall into that category. If you do, then you are an artist.
So, what's your definition, everybody? And, more importantly, are you an artist?
-- Eric

Thanks for getting this going again. Maybe we can get some insight for some new members on how they look at themselves.

An artist:
Someone who is able by virtue of imagination and talent or skill to create works of aesthetic value.
Everyone that creates art on here I would consider as an artist. I consider myself an artist. Maybe not a very good artist but you dont have to great to use your imagination talent or skill to create something of aesthetic value.
Caricature is a type of art in that sense, because you are creating something for someone that has aesthetic value to them.
Being a caricaturist to me is being a type of artist, you dont have to create fine art to be an artist. I think this is the view most people have. People think that to be an artist you have to create fine art. But I would consider that no true.
In short I consider myself an artist. along with the rest of the fine people on this board.
