Thanks Horate Doing the live sketches has become a habit for me I carry a sketch book everywhere I go and have learned a lot. I have even sold a couple on the spot and have had people ask me to sketch them or a companion. Most of the time though I get them done before people realize that I am there. Once you overcome the fear of drawing in public it becomes a lot of fun.

Thanks Toonmom
Getting over the fear of having people watching you is the main stumbling block. met a good friend of mine who was doing this at the same time I was. We often get together at a local restaraunt and crtique each others work, great learning tool. The sketch books are like diarys, that is why I date them. Most of the time people do not pay attention to you, but if they do they will usually complement your work then go on. I' ve obtained two portrait commissions from dong these commissions and recently received a reference for a third. I ve done these while standing in line at the licenses bureau, at the theatre, anywhere there is people. To get you started I challenge you to take a sketch book and go out and do three live sketches in the next week. I will guarentee you you will like it and will probably become hooked as I am. Nothing but good can come from this exercise.

You're doin great, Lightman! I had a horror of doing anything live til a couple of months ago, at a party I was asked to do a quick sketch of a guest's 2 year old son... I couldn't believe how much fun I had doing it with everyone gathered around watching! The average non-artist is usually astounded by anything more than a stick-figure and they're very complementary!

Dave hit on a good point. Most non artist are not as critical as we are about our own work. I can aways see things wrong but most of the time the subject never see it. They want a close likeness and it does not have to be to close. Most of these I am posting are never seen by thier subjects, and even if they are they are usually very complmentary. If not, so what. On one occasion I did a quick sketch of a woman who I had no intention of showing the results. A fellow artist saw what I was doing and after I let him see the finished sketch he took it to the woman and showed it to her. I did not like the sketch but the woman went on about how good it was. I thought she was just being nice. Later when I was leaving the restaraunt the woman who was leaving in her car, called me over and asked if I would sell the drawing to her. Toonmom get out there, you will love doing it. In looking at your recent posts you certainly have more ability to get a likeness and to do good drawing than many artist do. You will meet a lot of neat people and it will make your world much richer. I have met a ballerina, a jazz singer, an oprea singer, an actor and actress with local theaters, attorneys, ETC. You will find very few that are not supportive of what you do. You'll hear, I wish I could do that, a lot.

Thanks for the pep-talk light. This is something I would like to do but between school and the boys, I don't have a lot of free time. Maybe this weekend I will give it a try. I have to take my son to a birthday party. I think I will take my sketchbook along and draw people.

As it turns out, it's not going to happen. Hubby found out when leaving work last night that he had to work today. I will have all three kids today, minus one during the party he has to go to. I'm really upset because I had it all planned out. I was going to go to Barnes and Noble and sit in the cafe area and draw people for 3 hours. Now I will not be able to do that. Maybe another day?
