i just saw return of the king today, and i think it the best movie ive seen ever, and i watch movies all the time. i love this film cause it kept emotionaly involed all the time, and i cared about every charicter (and there were lots). i also liked the first two, but the last one was like the icing on the cake......what does anyone else think about return of the king, and the trilogy as a whole? was it as good as the books?

i have to say, i'm not a big fan of the books. i thought they were rather boring. it's been 20 years since i read them, and i really haven't had an interest in reading them again. i saw the first two movies, and i enjoyed them, but i'm not a huge fan. i don't like to line up, waiting for hours in the cold, just to see a movie. i'll wait until it's out on dvd, then i'll see it. i've avoided the third movie at the theatres, because i can't stand the thought of seeing that huge spider...and so i'm not going to pay 10 bucks to be frightened out of my wits. i do like the fantasy genre, but i tend to stick to the smaller, lesser-known stories. have you ever seen the ralph bakshi versions of the hobbit and lord of the rings?

As a huge fan of the Tolkien books, I am not only satisfied with the trilogy but in awe of it. Jackson brought the story, the spirit and the mythos of the books to life on the screen to the most minute detail. A stunning achievement. The cuts he had to make from the book's storylines were all necessary ones to make good films, and all were entirely forgivable given the fantastic end result.
The Rankin and Bass Hobbit/Return of the King were very nice and did well with the story in their own right. The Bashki "Lord of the Rings" animated film was garbage. Terrible animation and rotoscoping, nearly unwatchable.

did anyone else hear that jackson plans to do live-action version of the hobbit? should be interesting. i guess there's some legal wrangling going on about the rights to the story, apparently it's owned by two different corporations. i wonder if jackson will use ian holm as bilbo, since he played the older version in lotr. i know the bakshi versions were pretty awful, weren't they? i remember them fondly, since i was a kid when i watched them at the theatres, and they were the first animated movies i saw that weren't disneyfied. even tho they were dreadful, i fell in love with the medium. it's too bad bakshi had such limited animation techniques available.

just rent the cartoon movie; then you won't be too disappointed. as for the hobbit, jackson wants to do it the same style as the lotr series, and he wants the story to flow smoothly into lotr (it's a prequel to the three books, so that should work nicely).
