That looks great! From the strands of the hair to the shine of the lips and eyes. First attempt? What medium do you normally work with?
Very nice work, I'd love to see more.

Cheers toonMom, I started with just graphite , but have moved onto colour , I have been trying all different types of colour pencil , from the cheapest to the more expensive , I would like to try these Prisma make pencils , but can't find a stockist here in Scotland , they do have a Karisma brand , i was wondering if these were the British version, I've also had a "wee " go at Oils, and it was a wee go, I am now trying Acrylics but end up finishing details with pencil. pencil still preferable though , I have visited a few art groups now and there are some very talented people out there, as you know I'm new to this posting lark , so when I suss how to direct to a Image host to see more of my stuff, I'll let you know.... ;)Patbhoy

pathboy, that is very nice work. very good blending on the skin tones. have you ever tried using a colourless blending pencil, or a colourless blending marker? both work well, but give different effects. the pencil keeps it looking more like coloured pencil, and the marker turns it more like a watercolour. i'm impressed with your work, pathboy! i, too, am new to the posting thing, but so many of the people on this board have good advice, and are willing to help out. they're very patient, too, when mistakes happen (which they do, often, with me!)

Patbhoy! I am extremely impressed by your portrait! May I ask what colors you used on the iris? They are a beautiful blue and crystal clear. Everything you have done here is exceptional!
Have you tried Caran D'ache colored pencils? I am sure you can probably get them there in Scotland. They are French made and exceptionally wonderful pencils. I love the the Prismacolor, but I also love the Caran d'ache. If you can get them, you should try them.

Hi stoontoons,I don't think i've came across anything of the blending items you mention, except the paper blending sticks which are ok, I'll keep my eye open for them though , and as you say the main thing I noticed about the group was the encouragement and advice posted by the members which i feel i can call upon in the future.

Thank you Rosemary, It was a grey and a green pencil I used for the eyes they were a very cheap set which I came across I liked them as they were very hard and didn't lay down a lot of colour , I am forever buying cheaper pencils some of which have been very good in fact, but the majority end up in the bin , yes as for Caran D'ache, I can get them here and I think they are excellent I have a few, I tend to get them as I need them for certain drawings my plan is to splash out on a full set.

Pat I have to say that I keep coming back and looking at your portrait. It is so beautiful and I have learned some things from looking at your technique! I am working on a portrait right now -- Aragorn from Lored of the Rings -- for a friend of mine. He doesn't quite have blue eyes but has eyes pretty much like your eyes on this portrait, which is why I asked what colors you used. Well I spilled out the money for a whole set of both Prismacolor (my favorite) and Caran D'ache. They are my favorite pencils. I highly recommend both brands. I absolutely detest Derwent. Anyway, you are an exceptionally good artist and want to highly compliment you because I am being honest and want to encourage you. Looking forward to seeing more of your work.

patbhoy, i like your work as well. did you know that you can buy prismacolour or caran d'ache individually? that makes it cheaper. then you avoid buying those colours that come in a set, that you'll never use. i agree with rosemary...derwents are not my favourite, either. i like their graphite, but the colour pencils seems to be scratchy...i really like a smooth look, so i want something waxy. patbhoy, those blenders i mentioned can be found at an art supply store (assuming you are near one) or ordered online, from dick blick or supply places like that. i stock up, and buy two at a time, coz i never know if i'll find it again.

Hi Stoontoons! I do the same thing with the colorless blenders. I stock up on them cause I never know if I can get them. A lot of the times I go to the art supply store, nearest one to me is an hour and a half away, and they are out of them. When in need I use the tortillion stick, if I have nothing else.

Thank you Rosemary, I'm glad it is of some help to you,I have just checked out the Aragorn poster my daughter has on her wall and I believe it may be the same picture you are working on, the eyes are quite similar in colour, I am definitely going to attempt to get my hand on these Prismacolor pencils and expand my collection of Caran D'ache , I have posted some more of my drawings onto a host image site and I will try and send you the address for you to view, if I've set it up right that is
