I thought this would be a good topic to start a discussion on. What is the best way to start off marketing yourself? a Website? e-bay? Doing freebie's for people? I have heard/read about pro's and con's of each. I'm curious as to what everyone else thinks about the subject.

this is certainly an interesting topic. that's the hardest part of being an artist...some of us creative types certainly have the vision, but marketing can be difficult. my biggest problem with marketing is finding the money to invest. it's a bit of a conundrum; you want to make money selling your art, but you need money to start a business and make money! i've tried developing three different business plans with three different organizations. hated them all. i thought it was pointless to project the financial picture, and spend time doing all those numbers, when you don't know how much you'll end up selling. writing up a business plan just meant a lot of work that amounted to nothing, for me. i also attended a seminar on how to sell your artwork. i discovered that the instructor was more concerned with booking me for a $250 session to tell me how to sell my stuff than with giving me some tips on getting started. one thing i found out is that local employment centres and campuses often have loads of information on how to write a business plan, marketing, advertising, all that stuff. if you do a keyword search, "marketing artwork" you can find tons of info, all for free! there's an excellent resource book called The Graphic Designer's Market (or The Artist's Market) that have listings of companies where you can submit your work. also lots of ideas on where to sell, how to advertise, and such. that's some of what i've done.
