I know I'm replying a little bit late but I thought I'd add my background in here too..... being that stoontoons is my mom, I've grown up with an art background my entire life - my grandfather was a cartoonist as well so it seems to run in the family! because of my mom working at the local gallery here, I've had the chance to take a lot of classes for free - painting, comic book art, etc. I got into anime/manga in about grade 9 or so when my mom taught an alternative comic book class at the gallery and two girls who were big into that stuff attended. I only have really one reference book I received as a christmas gift(those How to draw manga ones) that I use for proportion and perspective mainly. The rest I learned by copying images or recreating from my mind images of anime and manga characters seen on TV/VHS. We used to have nights of anime showings and the group of girls that used to get together were all artists, so we always had our sketchbooks with us and opportunities to draw! I took high school art as well, and for the first 2 years had a really great teacher - I've never been a big fan of drawing photo-realism or painting, but she managed to be awesome about it and really helped me in delving into those styles. Sadly, in grade 11 and 12 our art program was pretty bad and not a lot of attention paid to it and I didn't learn much out of the last 2 years. I use mainly pencil and pen for my sketches...pretty basic materials - sketchbooks, white paper that's about it.
however, i'm now getting into doing fashion illustration, which I think is where my art is going to be focused - along with makeup artistry(which is what I'm currently training in and I consider to be an art) and creating looks on paper and on face(trust me, it's not as easy at it looks!) =) there i'm done!

Not late at all Blaze! Thanks for posting here. I think it's interesting to know what everyone's backgrounds are. I envy you, to have a parent interested in art would have been great. I wasn't even allowed to take art classes in High School I suspect we will be seeing lots of drawings of people from you?

yup, a lot of the work I do is character design and costume work - not a lot of wild poses or comic book style splash pages and action(so much). I've been told by a lot of people I should get into doing fashion illustration and fashion design. =)

Thank you very much!,I have not been using colour pencils for very long I am still basically plodding along, experimenting with blending mostly , I have tried to find a class who deal with CP here, but without luck thats why I have been looking for a group online to pick up some advice , and I feel this is the group, with you and others having studied CP , I feel I need a greater knowledge of paper types and their suitability with certain pencils, as I tend to stick mostly with the one started with, I look forward to your help, I am presently trying to upload some pics to an image host for transfer soon, thanks again....Pat

Hey there, Okay, my story. Facts: I'm a 6'6" totally confused 46 YO guy in Oklahoma. Since I'm a native Angelino, that contributes to part of the confusion (i.e., homesickness). I work at a radio station, act part-time (community theater stuff) and have been drawing ever since I could hold something resembling a pencil in my chubby hand. My art training is spotty, so I guess I'm self-taught. When I was a kid I loved cartoons. Still do. In my young-adulthood, I discovered D&D and RPG's in general, which helps as a partial outlet for my art. I loved MAD Magazine and greatly admire Mort Drucker and Jack Davis's work. I've done a few caritcatures in the past, but I usually reserve it for celebrities, as I felt that folks I knew didn't like my renditions of them. My art influences have been the aforementioned artists, AL Hirschfeld, some Disney and the Animation Pantheon of Avery, Clampett, Freling and Jones. At present, I'm Monster Coordinator for a group known as the Wanderer's Guild ( www.wanderersguild.com), a like-minded group of D&D players trying to publish a game supplement. I know that the Art Business, like Show Business is primarily a Business. That's why I'm in Radio. :-) I'm also frustrated with my art. Perhaps it's due to my lack of training (or my inherant laziness), but there seems to be something blocking the thought from my brain to the paper. Another sore point is the fact that I have a hard time "loosening up" my drawings. Not that I expect to be brilliant in a short time, just the feeling that what I learn I can't apply. Kind of like knowing the steps, but not being able to use them. Yet I know, practice, practice. So I presevere. Anyway, didn't mean to go off there. Among the drawing books I picked up a few years ago was Len Redman's How To Draw Caricatures. That, and some other good drawing books (I love Christopher Hart's stuff) got me gong with art again. I'm also a Big Time Film Buff (specialities: Comedy and Animation). So, that's my tale. Hope you enjoyed it. I'll be here all week, don't forget to tip your waitress. -SJ

Great story SJ! I feel the same way, I know what to do, yet I can't apply it to paper. I keep telling myself that I know how to do it, but I still can't. Does someone have a magic potion to cure this?
