Where would you like your artwork to take you? Where has it taken you already? Why do you strive to be a better artist, cartoonist, caricaturist, etc.? Where would you like to go, where don't you want to go with your skills? What do you think is keeping you from getting there? What do you think is helping you to get there? Caricatures - I started doing these as a hobby, as I get better at them they become even more fun to draw. Now I am thinking I might want to do them for money some day (when I get good enough). I used to think I would never do a live gig, but now I am considering that as well. Maybe something part-time, I don't know.
Serious Art - I thought about doing portraits and such for a living, but I get tired of doing them too quickly. I think I would get brunt out before I even got started.
Cartoons - I am not very good at doing cartoons, but I would love to draw them for a living. I have always thought it would be neat to do a comic strip on a regular basis. I used to dream of this as a kid.
For now I am happy to just draw for fun.
How about everyone else? What do all of you want to do with your artwork? Do live caricature gigs? Studio caricatures? Get your work in a gallery or just stay casual?

My aim with my cartooning is to establish my self as a world class cartoonist.I do ok with my cartooning,But still a lot of work to do.I am very keen to get into kids books. Caricatures...To be honest i thought i never could do them.I tried a few years back, but really was dissapointed. The problem was i had no feedback or help in what to do.Thats when i came across Mauri about 6 months ago.Mauri has helped through his amazing course, book and his words of endless encouragment. For that i really thank him.I then joined the loop board and now this board. The loop gave me a chance to have a go at drawing other people then posting.Toonmom has done a fantastic job with this board. And i personally would like to thank her. This board offers the best way to improve. To draw and post, then have the comments.I have improved out of sight in 6 months. So my aim with caricatures,is to be able to draw anyone on the spot, with a good likeness. As for other art or more seroius art,i have no desire to learn or draw it.I admire people who can do it.but its not for me.I love cartoons and caricatures. cheers Grant

Thanks Grant! Do you want to do live gigs? I also tried drawing caricatures several years back, actually the first time was about 15 years ago and then again a couple other times between then and now. I always thought I wasn't good at it, so I could never do them. I really owe where I am today to Mauri and his class. The members of this board have helped me as well. You guys do some great work and it really inspires me to push hard and not give up. Thanks everyone!!

The thought of drawing live scares me too. But, I am a little less scared than I was a month ago, so maybe in a couple more months I will think about actually doing it. I was thinking of maybe trying some live drawing for fun first. Like going to the school and drawing my sons classmates or something like that just for practice with no pressure.

I read a lot about fear and not being good enough in these fourms. Well a least I know I am not alone. However I have conqured that a lot by carrying a sketch book and sketching people at book shops, coffee shops ect. Most people do not notice you, but even if they do they either ignore you or come over and see you work. Most of the time they complement you or tell you about a realitive who is a great artist. I normally thank them while I continue to sketch some one else. I have even had people ask me to sketch them. I have a friend who practices by doing pen and ink caractures on newspapers and napkins and leaving them on a table. He has come back into the store at a later date and has seen some of his work on a wall, as well as had some people tell him they have taken his work and framed the piece. I realized I got off of the subject of the fourm but thought this information might help you get over stage fright. It is even fun to let the subject catch you sketching, just to see their reaction. I never had one be mad, yet! By the way Books a Million, Borders and Barns and Noble are great places to go.
