Hey Folks! Have you ever gotten a WEIRD art commission? Y'know, "draw my dog surfin with Grandma" type thing? I'd like to see if you can top this! I worked at a headstone company for two years doing portraits on headstones! I used an engraving tool so they are actually "etched in stone"...heh heh a little slim humor there. -Slim ;D ps...I didn't letter it (that was sandblasted) but I did the front and back. This stone was about four feet high.

Wow, NICE work, Slim. Only the good bass players die young. Can I ask how the tone values are achieved?

Yes you may Dave...the etching tool can only do one thing...it chips off a tiny bit of black stone and leaves a white dot behind, so it's kind of like scratchboard...you start with black and bring out the lights.

that is astounding!
the closest thing i've had to a "weird commission" wasn't a commission. it was a request from a kid at a bar mitzvah i was caricaturing at. he told me his goal was to give me the strangest request i had ever gotten. i think he accomplished it. he asked me to draw him riding on the back of an elephant, holding the entire royal family in a sack.

Elephant Rider? Royal Family in a sack huh...hold on Don.
<Ring Ring>Yes is this Prince Charles? Oh, hi Chucklesworth, I just wanted to tell you about an odd anecdote Don just told me...what's that? You have to go? You're in a sack? Where? On an elephants back? How did you get...oh, and how did he sneak up on you? You were...talking to your houseplants and didn't bother to notice. Hmmm...okay then, bye for now Chuck-a-doodle-doo. <click>
You see Don, when you include the Royal Family, it automatically changes into the weirdest commision.

I had to do an illustration for a headstone only a few months ago. It was for an artist friend...It was a simple design of two paint brushes crossed over a pallette...it looked something like a logo.
I didn't do it direct onto the stone though...I just supplied the line art....It will probably be my longest lasting piece of artwork.

i'd like to share the weirdest request I ever received, which I turned down. A man called me, wanted a portrait of himself drawn. Fine. Then he asked if I objected to drawing nudes...which I don't, since I draw nude models in class every week. He said it was a birthday gift...so I assumed it was for a wife or girlfriend, something like that. Fine also. Then he said he was giving it to his son, who was turning five, so he could hang it up in his room. I got so creeped out by that, I refused the job. Can you imagine that poor kid, as a teenager, having to explain to his buddies why he has a naked picture of his dad on the wall? ewww...

Hmmm...that is, I believe, one of the creepiest art stories I have ever heard. Just curious...how did you turn him down? -Slim (feeling slightly icky)
