I believe it's the experience of the artist, the things they are interested in, and whether they are an outgoing or introverted kind of person. For example, my experience growing up in a large family, with my dad working in advertising, changed my point of view a lot. I grew up in an era when women were just starting to be known for their career choices, and there were still rules and restrictions on what a girl should do. But seeing what my dad did for a living was exciting...and I started reading comics when Kirby, Lee, Buscema, etc were drawing. So my style developed from a love of comics, cartoons (Mad Magazine) and sitting with my brother and dreaming up new superheroes. I love fine art, too, but I'm attracted to vivid, abstract images, and I rarely draw landscapes. I love a good portrait, but there has to be something emotional and unique about it, before I'm interested. I loved studying Rembrandt in Art History, but I found Rococo and Baroque to be too sentimental and mawkish. I love anything kitschy, just because it's so against what people think is good art...and I love pop culture. another person, more introverted, might enjoy landscapes and painting still-lifes, and find the restful colours and placid ambience to be more suitable for their style. I think drawing is as individual as handwriting, and your style evolves and changes.
