I'd like to start painting in acrylic real soon, but rather than just go buy a pack with loadsa colours I won't use, can anyone tell me what I'll need to get started. I'm looking for the main skin tone combinations. Also if anyone can recommend a good brand, I'd be most greatful.
Cheers

ochre burnt umber vermillion cerulian blue mars black titanium white maybe a crimson or similar shade of deep red maybe a brighter yellow.
that should do you, to start. it's been years since i've worked with acrylics, and when i did, i was never all that serious about it, so i found that for my purposes, the cheapest brands served me just fine.

my advise to you Craig start painting in grey tones, i did the same mistakes than you are about to make. First you have to handle the painting process, dryness and all that.

I was wondering about that myself Nelson. I want to start painting and it seems like using grey tones would be easier to learn. I think I might start out that way.

The other thing you might want to try Craig before investiing a lot of money is to use the three primarys and white. There is also a great book titled HOW TO Paint SKIN tones, for oils, acrylics, water color, and pastels. There are pages of charts of how to mix various skin tones. The author is James Horton and the publisher is Chartwell Books inc. Just a thought.
