Your first drawing is actually quite good. but if you have the chance, definitely take a class. there is nothing else that will teach you as much about figure drawing as seeing the figure in front of you, and noticing how the muscles move in relation to each other. Mel's face is a bit small, but the likeness is good. In a sketch you can get away without drawing all the details, but you might want to do some others to finish the hair and costume, as both are full of texture, and that's missing here.

i agree that the first one is the much stronger of the two. but are you sure that photo was of yourself? cuz it looks just like me from behind...

Good work, I also like figures just don't do much now days. The fist is the most dynamic but I like the freedom and loosness in the second. By the way I think that Don means that he also has a head, two arms and a back
