Rob AKA as Caricature Shop asked for a tutorial for my recent Ron Howard caricature, now I'm honoured he asked, but I'm not going through all the steps as the rendering took a good three hours. I'll outline my set up process and promise to do a 'stage by stage' in the next non deadline biggie I do. The sketch takes perhaps 10 minutes to do ................ After cleaning it up I take it from the background with the magic wand, hence the solid border ..... with only the face selected I fill at 60% with the predominant mid range face colour - some people use an orange - my preference is this saves a bit of painting later on .... The next stage is to apply a layer mask, I select the area outside the sketch then 'hide selection' - stops me making a mess ! I commence rough painting the shadows and highlights at 100% opacity adjusting the flow between 5 & 20% (tip from Jan Openbeeck - thanks) using the eyedropper to select the colours from the source photo ... I use a large array of brushes / sizes and like the chalky/grainy ones for doing the flesh stops it going that glazed / plasticky look. Up to now is less than 30 minutes, the next 2.5 hours is making sure the shadowing, flesh tones remain faithful to the source photo and the exaggeration stays with the first sketch though I tweek that if I'm not happy with it ...... Now I know there's a lot between the picture on the left to the final article but I will do a full process, perhaps as a Quicktime movie, and add it here later. I hope no one opens this on dial up !!! ;D Terry

Terry,
Thank you for allowing us a brief peek behind the curtain. We eagerly await the 'big-screen' version.
Thanks again!
Sincerely,
Rob

Eventhough I don't do digital work, I still enjoy this glimpse at how you work.
