I've been trying to learn how to draw heads from these tutorials tearain.tripod.com/hp/draw/draw.html , www.anticz.com/heads.htm with the view to exaggerating features once I've got the basics. However, I'm struggling to get things right. If anyone's got a spare second, could you show me a really quick sketch of the sort of structure/method you use for drawing heads. Much appreciated! Lauren

What a subject. I suspect there are as many answersd as there are artist. The drawing the oval and putting a face inside the oval never worked for me. I normally start with the hair line at the top of the head or with the eyes then add the other features. The best answer is to draw, draw, draw. draw from magazines, from news papers, from cartoons, and best of all from live subjects. I like to take a sketchbook into a coffee shop or bookstore, and start to draw the people. Don't worry about the people around you most won't bother you or if they do I just explain I am practicing drawing, my hobbie. Thats the best advice I can give. Mabey some of the better artist can give you better tips,. Another might want to try is to draw portions of the head, nose and lips, eyes to nose . It only takes that little section of good work to make you keep trying. The more you try the better you will get.

Thanks Slim. I looked at your tutorial before I started the slacker challenge and it really helped me to understand the angles on a face. Lightshifter, thanks for the advice. When I've practised loads in the privacy of my home I might consider going out and drawing people in coffee shops. I do have a favourite coffee shop in my city, it's perfect for people-watching. Maybe one day soon I'll draw there!
