Hey everyone! I want to learn how to draw caricature and thought I would buy a book (that's all I can afford right now)LOL. Anyway, this is the book I want to buy. It's called "Let's Toon Caricatures" by Keelan Parham. Do you think it will teach me? If you have suggestions on other books feel free to suggested away. I need help! Thanks! ;D

I know Keelan through the ncn board, he's a great caricaturist, and by all accounts his book is great, I'm sure you can't go wrong with it.

personally, i don't think books are the best way to learn to draw caricatures, but maybe that's just because i didn't do it that way. every book i've checked out seems to me to be too much about "rules" of caricaturing, where in my opinion, there are no rules.

Don, I agree with you. Not being able to go to art school I thought the best way to learn was from books. I think this is true in some things but not in drawing. I agree that the best education to learn to draw is by drawing and getting valuable critiques, suggestions, and comments from wonderful people like everyone here. thanks, Ricky

I have to agree with all. Mauri's book is the best in my opinion, but Keelan's book is good too. I would have to say though, overall, the only thing that will make you better is draw. This is something I really need to make time to do again. I pushed it out of my schedule for school and it's hard to get it back in there. The best thing you can do is go through all the threads here and draw every photo you can find.

that's what I'm going to do Toonmom. I'm going to draw everyone's picture again.....(be afraid, be very afraid hehehe). I use Mauri's book as a reference. When i'm stuck on a feature, I pull out Mauri's book and study some of favorite artists' sites and work through what I'm stuck on. I also think that this forum is THE best way to improve also because everyone offers important and valuable suggestions on how to improve. Ricky

Rule #1: No rules.
Only one thing is certain , nothing is certain. Fun required, nothing else.Make us laugh, and go for it.

Hans,
My friend, our sage. He said it simply and stated it correctly.
The secret is that there is no substitute for time and practice.

I could be mistaken - but as I understand it, Keelans book is essentially his training manuel for new employees.
--------------
Some people learn good from books - some don't. Like everyone is saying though; nothing beats drawing, drawing, drawing, drawing, drawing, drawing, drawing, drawing, drawing, drawing... ad nauseum.
Then draw some more. Finding another artist to give you some good feedback is important too IMO - and thats what the board is for.
So inbetween all those drawings take time to post your work.

I agree with Don that sometimes books aren't the best way to learn...but I love to read through all sorts of art books, thank goodness for the library, or I wouldn't have any money left over to buy food! I find looking at other artists, even if I don't learn some new rule, is inspiring enough. I suggest trying to borrow the book first, then if it's a dud, you don't waste your money. For cheap books, try surfing half.com, or hamiltonbooks, both great resources (just remember it's u.s. dollars, so if you live outside the states, it could get pricey)
