I made arrangements to do my first gig today. It's for a fund raiser, so I'm not getting paid much but it will be great practice. I told them I could do black and white head shots and charge around $5 each - I keep $1 to cover my cost. They are also asking for donation pieces to be auctioned off. I think I will try to donate at least a couple of pieces. I'll get some practice and some exposure. I plan on taking business cards or flyers in an attempt to book some more gigs (paying ones next time). The event is to take place the first week in June. she is going to get back with me with all the details.
I can't wait!

This is big girl!I took two chairs and made posters and taped them to the back of the chair.(like stoontoons picture)Her advise worked for me.The first one I did my hand was shaking I was so nervous. After the second one I was fine.Everyone was so nice about my work I think because I didn't charge much and they felt it was all in fun.I went to my sons school and drew all of them for practice.I know you will be fine.

Well, I did it. It went pretty well but I didn't draw as many people as I would have liked to. I learned a lot though. You really get an asssessment of your skills when you are put on the spot. I don't think I'll be doing another one for a while. I know what I need to work on though.

Congtrats toonmom! takes fortitude to do that. keep at it and you will get faster...and better. Are you using marker? sometimes usea quick pencil (for proportion)and then marker over them.

I used a Pitt brush pen. Actually, I did them pretty quickly and the likeness was there. The problem I had was with line weight and filling the page. I used 8.5x11 instead of 11x14 because I have never worked that big and didn't think a gig was the best place to get used to it. Even at the 8.5x11, I had trouble filling the page. They only took me about 2-3 minutes a piece and that was with stopping to talk for a few seconds here and there. I just was not happy with my work, that's all.

Don't stop to talk. Talk while you are working. A caricature artist has to learn how to "walk and chew gum" at the same time. I always draw on 11 x 17 cover stock while doing gig work and often find that I don't have enough room.

I want to work bigger, I just don't think live is the time to give it a try.

I knew you could do it, Ro! Don't quit now.
Size of the paper should be whatever works for you. I've seen plenty of people use 8.5x11 at gigs. I carry that size in a clipboard with me everywhere I go in case I feel like drawing someone - and it has has my contact info stamped on the back!

congrats on first gig...nerve reanching at first...but once you knocke out the first one i bet it was smooth sailing after that....like dmcaricature wrote...draw a light quick sketch..not to many lines of the outline of the head eyes postion nose...mouth and then marker.it helps and that way you can work on filling the page..i normally do a background splash that way the page is covered thats 11x17 paper...so if you pencil it in first you can determine how big to make it...just my 2 cents and once again congrats...

Hurray! A first gig! Did you take any pictures? I love pictures! Hey, ya know what? Wouldn't it be neat for the newbies to see some professional's first year pieces? I know mine were AWFUL! Here's something I have learned...if you can draw more than a stick figure, non-artists will be amazed and they will pay you! Don't give up! -Slim
