Nelson, Jan was nothing but class. He was supposed to give a brief seminar, but due to popular demand, gave a second imipromptu one. When that one ran late, he gave a third one. And he was one of those nuts who was always working away in the drawing room when I dragged myself to bed in the wee hours of the morning. Very down to earth, very enthused about art, and a regular joe to boot. On the other hand, he dances poorly.
Vidal, if you're following this thread, Jan used a picture of you in one of his demos on exaggeration, so there are now about fifty caricatures of you floating around the world!

great post Mike: Sounds pretty inspiring. Now tell me what did you get out of it mostly. Inspiration, drawing tips, more confidence? Do you think attending this will make you a better caricature artist?

Daniel,
Inspiration: definitely. Drawing tips: yes, on materials, techniques, styles, and more. More confidence: no, not at all. most of the year I'm a big fish in a little pond. In my back yard, I'm one of the best caricaturists out of forty. At the convention, given a generous estimate, I'm in the middle of the totem pole. Which is good - if I were at the top, what would be the point of going? What would I have to learn?
Of course, there's also the comraderie factor. Tons of other artists around that know all about what you go through on a daily basis and can empathize with you. And it's fun! And you meet agents that book caricature artists, like Tad and me, so there's the prospect of actually making money as a result of networking with the agents and other artists. And other good stuff, too.

I am a little late here jump in after the convention. Been very busy with things. I always have to many things going on. I would share my con photos, but I trashed them all on my computer., by mistake. Plus karena left all here art supplies. But I can say it was great. Mike your a very nice person, everyone at the convention was great. I guess I stayed out of main area, I went and took all the classes, and learn alot. I did draw but in the other convention room, took my computer and stuff, had to move once because of the rain coming down out of the roof. I came out of the convention with some good decisions made. this next year I am going to work on my caricature skills using my computer pad, and marker and watercolors. I like what I saw, and learned from the classes. I am really looking to improving my skills.

What about the drawings? Are there any pictures of that? Or links to them?

tom richmond posted this link on the loop, and i think it's the best of all the ncn links i've seen, as it shows a nice balance of people and artwork. one of my favourites is the one of napoleon dynamite, apparently by an artist named nicholas mitchell. i'd love to see some more of his work but i could find no reference to him at all on the internet. www.miketmullen.com/ncn_gallery/

Here's a come-to-the-convention short that was produced at the con. It shows a lot of the artists and some of the work. Apple Quicktime is required to view this video. You can download it for free here: www.apple.com/quicktime/download/ And here is the video: www.goofyfaces.com/Loop/NCN-2005.htmlDon, Nick Mitchell hid out the entire convention, skulking around the drawing rooms. He didn't actually tell me this, but I think he was too shy to draw. Don't let this happen to you! Here's one I did of him before I met him.
