Just thought I'd share a few remarks and would like to know what others think. I catch myself spending a lot of time on some faces, little on others and some not at all. I asked myself why. Honesty helps here... I personally am more likely to do a detailed drawing if ... 1) If a person has a good detailed closeup posted 2) If they have a good "caricature face" (not symetrical, barbie and ken type) (It's more fun to draw) ;D 3) They have been drawing others and not just looking for a free caricature of themselves or someone else. I've noticed some get their picture done and are never heard from again. 4) I guess there are other reasons but these are the main ones. I watch the number of post on certain people (not just "now draw this" people, but celebrities. Has anyone else played self analyst on this? Mikey

Hi Mike I am reading your post, and I can sometimes understand how you feel. But there are sometimes I want to just bless someone anyway, if it's a 'come and go person'. I remember when I first started on these type of caricature boards, I was not aware of this unwritten courtesy. I guess I should have thought about it. but I am a little slow on things like this. Even just posting and getting response people are slow if you are kind of just hit and miss from time to time. There are lots of different reasons. I my self just have too much going on all the time. I use this board more than other boards. I do like to go to others as well, just that I have to choose where to invest my time to build up that 'board relationship.' I am not sure what you mean by you saying the following: 'I watch the number of post on certain people (not just "now draw this" people, but celebrities. Has anyone else played self analyst on this?' Now I have got to run to work!!! Mike N.

Mikey, I participate in several boards, all of which have a similar 'draw me and I'll draw you' category. The caricature section in the Forum at www.sketchbooksessions.com/new/index.htm is my favorite one to participate in. In fact, with the exception of the most recent entrants, I've drawn everyone who has ever submitted a photo there. The reason is this - they have guidelines set up as to how to submit your photo, and most of the folks who post their photos play by the rules. The guidelines are, don't post unless you're a caricature artist, and post three clear and large photos of yourself: one front view, one side view, and one three quarter view. Just like here, there is a wide range of talent contributing, from the ridiculously skilled to the beginning artist. No one, least of all me, really cares about that. All I want is good pictures to draw from, and the knowledge that random non-artists are not posting photos just in order to take advantage of the artists on the board. (And I love getting drawn, and I've had some wonderful caricatures done of me there as well).

yeah, mikey, the criteria you listed there are pretty much what i go by as well. and, of course, i consider it an obligation to draw anyone who draws me. with only a few small exceptions. i haven't drawn deadendstory yet because he just hasn't posted any photos i feel inclined to try to work from. too small, too fuzzy. i don't bother trying to get a likeness of someone if i can't even tell what they look like! (sorry deadend)

C'mon guys and gall's , this free caricature thing is getting out of hand , someone puts up a picture and bang theres 5 or 6 top quality caricatures, which you'd normaly pay alot of money for, I think people should earn the right to caricatured , let them draw people on the group who have obviously been posting for awhile, and then and only then if the recipient of the caricature has the time to do a return caricature all well and good. JUST HAD TO GET THAT OFF MY CHEST, as Don said, we should be spending our time drawing celebrities to add to our site or future site.

Hey guys, I know I'm real new here but I gotta say, this forum does have the most helpful and "not afraid to help others attitude" that I've seen in a while. I really injoy this site alot. My only problem is I want MORE! ;D Everyone here is so talented, I would like to see more how to's from the top dogs here. Then, as a newby, you'll have a chance to work on something or improve on work yourself. I think I saw a section here on learning but the post there are old and really it didn't have a lot of info on stuff. eyes, noses etc. Just for you guys, I'll try to put together a group drawing of all of you! ... I'll throw Hans in there too. Dave

I second dschmittle thought on being new and this site helping me tons...I understand that I may be one of the newbies that posted a picture and is now getting some people a little fired up. However, I am serious about wanting to really learn. I have already improved since I started. Gaining confidence everyday and I appreciate the incredible talent that is here in this forum.

nah, not you jc. you've already shown that you're here for the learning experience and for the fun. there have been others, before you got here, though, who have never submitted a drawing but gotten several done of themselves. that's what gets us ranting! as far as offering my "teaching" goes, i'm not much of a teacher personally. i find it easiest if someone posts something and then asks what to do to improve it, rather than trying to tell you random things i've learned.

I feel like an a'hole for not drawing those who took the time to draw me. It's not that I'm going to do it--I WILL!
Latley I've either felt that I totally suck at this; or my style needs improving.
All that to say is that I WILL draw everybody who's drawn me. That and some celebrities.

Pagmatic, Why not try something totally differant than your style all together. I mean if you draw semirealistic now, draw extreamly cartoony, or visa versa. Try exaggerating even more, thats what I'm going to try next. Give it a shot. Dave

Well this seen to be a hot topic! I am back from work now so let me add to my earlier post.
I want and need to draw more celebrities for my website. But there is a part of me that wants to draw the others on this board here first. It's hard for me to take time I do have to do it all. Some how I need to learn to do both, Friends and celebrities!
Some of us do better at somethings than others. Some it's teaching, others it sharing, venting, drawing, greeting, etc... But we should all try to do a little of each. Another factor to think about is that we all go thought seasons from time to time.
I read through all these posts and I can understand where everyone is coming from.
You all here really do make this a very nice place.
Mike N.

Man did I open a can of worms. Sorry This is a really GREAT place and the people are SUPER. I guess some of it boils down to when you spend a good deal of time (up to about 4 or 5 hours on some of the more detailed ones) and those you do get gone quickly, it can't help but peeve you a little. I'm more than willing to help anybody who is really interested in sharing their skills and learning also as several of you know who I have helped through private emails. I always will be. I have learned so much since I've been here, and I am very thankful.. I learn from everyone. I devour those tutorials Hans, Brush and several others have given us links to. By the way.... ain't we got GREAT moderators also! and Thanks especially TOONMOM for putting this out there for us who need this outlet! By the way ... one more thing. Mike N. I meant that I like to see what people are interested in drawing. Like, Sports figures, Actors, Political figures, etc. I've noticed that there is less participation on groups than singles. Like the "Will and Grace" group. As I recall it had very few participating even though they're a very funny sit-com. That's all ... no deep psychological analyzing. Mikey

Jc, Dave, Pag - no one is talking about you guys, so don't worry!
This board, and many others, have a problem with members going MIA. It's just a part of life I guess. It's nice when a member tells you they are going to be away for awhile, like Maz does (I think she changed her name though). Anyway, it does make you wonder what happened to them. I am guilty of joing a board, spending hours on it and then forgetting about it for months. I try to do too much and something always has to be cut out. I'm sure that is what happens to many of our members.
Back on topic... I have very little time to draw these days so I tend to look for that face that really jumps out at me and looks fun to draw. I do find that when I am thinking of who I'd like to draw, the people that come to mind are Grant, Don, Nial, Hans, stoontoons, Mike N and some of the other main members on this board. First of all, because I have drawn you before and I know I am better and can do an improved caricature of you. and second, because I feel that sort of "board friendship" with you. It's not that I feel the newbies aren't worthy of my time. I think it's the difference between drawing a friend and drawing a stranger.
