Can anyone here tell me about the chalk and glove method of coloring caricatures? I found this tutorial but I am unfamiliar with that type of chalk and the technique.

The tutorial referred to above by David Boyer (Bippy) is not about the chalk and glove method. ToonMom asked me to explain it, though, so here's the down and dirty of it: I use a snug fitting Jersey garden glove (look for ones marked 'for smaller hands', or 'ladies' ts.smoothcorp.com/cornerhardware/199065.299x299.jpeg) which you can find in any hardware store. The chalks are lecturers chalks: here's what they look like - www.chalkguymedia.com/Store/chalk.html. I have a range of colors on each finger. Cool colors on one finger, warm colors on another, yellow on one, black and brown on another, and white/grey on my thumb. I dip my fingers into the soft wide sticks of chalk. The pigment adheres to the glove and then I smear it around on the inked caricature to introduce the color. There is a ridiculous mess involved with the whole procedure, and I am very limited by the fact that the smallest area I can effectively detail is still as big as my pudgy finger. Also, it's very hard to get your darks dark. The chalks are not very opaque, which permits nice gradation of tone but creates difficulties when you want to change a dark color to a lighter one. I use a kneaded eraser when I do studio work to back out the highlights. I don't recommend the chalk and glove method for nice, detailed studio quality work, but it's great for getting a quick party or retail caricature done well.

A ridiculous mess is an understatement! I received my chalk yesterday and opened them up today. I knew I was in trouble when the outside of the box was covered in various colors of chalk dust!
Any tips for dealing with this stuff? What do you keep them in? Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

No good tips. They really are a mess. I keep mine in a box that I found at Target: it looks like a tackle box, the top has slots for sixteen chalks and the bottom has room for gloves and markers. But I haven't bought a box in years, and everyone I know has a different type of container.

I bought a box today for the chalks. I didn't think to look for something to keep the gloves in too. Thanks for the tips!
