In a nutshell, our government's powers are divided into three parts. Executive (President), Judicial (Supreme Court), and Legislative (House of Representatives and Senate). So that's the leader that often sets the agenda, lawmakers and law interpreters. Any can be either party or independant (rare because it takes buddies to get up in the ranks).
Generally speaking, the Democrats are liberal and Republicans are conservative. Liberals lean towards socialism to lessor or greator degrees, seeking governmental solutions to all ills. Conservatives lean towards capitalism, and favor smaller government with less intrusion.
There's room for agreement and the two do overlap quite a bit but the fundemental difference in how we view the government's role in our lives affects our interpretation of politics and who we favor, however the public is often not really tuned into specifics and tends to favor those who fit their bias. Each side tends to demonize the other and the extremists have a way of finding each other and make most of the noise.

good explanation. i never understood the american political system. in canada, our system of government is based on the british parliament, with the house of commons, and the senate. i have trouble just understanding that! americans have an election coming up soon, don't they? is that for president, or just senators?
