a friend's wife asked me to draw a caricature of neil young so she could purchase a print of it from me for my friend for his birthday. this is the first stage, the (obviously) very rough sketch. i need to move relatively quickly on this one (that is, as compared to how quickly these things usually work out for me, what with trying to balance my drawring time with my full-time work, family, etc.), as his birthday is in early december, and i need to allow time for shipping and such. so any feedback you might have on this as it goes along would be greatly appreciated (if anyone ever comes around here anymore). thanx.

here's today's work. i wish i had some great, inspiring words of wisdom to tell you about my colouring process, but the truth is, i pretty much make it up as i go along. i usually can't remember how i approached the last one i did, so i don't really have a process i follow. you can see here where, on my colour layers, i've already started to change some of what i had on the pencil sketch. structure stuff mostly. that'll probably continue as i go along. if anyone notices things i'm doing wrong as i post these phases, i'd appreciate you pointing it out. thanx.

hi Don, i like a lot your style of drawing, but not so the color way, i think it could be easier using only watercolor to give them an idea of volumes, suggest some light....here one sketch Lee Jones i did some months ago...from the film No country for old men.

easier, sure, but that's not the look i'm going for. besides, i had to do this one digitally, since the only time i have to work on it at the moment is during my lunch breaks at work. here's today's update. the sketch layer is still there, but made invisible for the time being. at this point, i really only use it as an occasional reference.

okay, so here's today's update. i decided that the skin tone i had was much more yellowy than i wanted. so i changed that, and, based on monkey's critique, made the skin highlights more yellowy. also, he has eyes now, to make him slightly less creepy. slightly.

here's today's work. i'm having a hard time getting the hands to the same level of detail as the face, for some reason. don't worry, the guitar's not staying on that straight-up-and-down angle. i'll be adjusting that after putting in the details.

i think i'm pretty much done with this now, except that i'm not 100% thrilled with the background. i've always had trouble with backgrounds, trying to find shades that don't blend in with the face but also don't stand out more than the subject. so if anyone ha suggestions on how that could be improved, i'm open to them. but i'm calling neil himself done.
