Has anyone ever done or thought about doing charity work? I thought it would be neat to go to a childrens hospital and draw caricatures of the kids there. It would be great practice for doing live gigs and I bet the kids would love it.

i've done a few charity gigs, toonmom. i decide if i'm going to do them based on if it's a charity that i believe in (for example, i would do events for the cancer society because my father-in-law died from lung cancer). i also decide if the person truly believes in the cause, or if they just want free entertainment. i think the idea of doing caricatures for kids would be great. that's something that you'll see immediately has an effect. and sick children do need a little joy in their lives. check with the parents and nursing staff...maybe you could go in at a time when they are there, and then both kids and parents enjoy. i don't mind doing something for free, as long as i feel that the person receiving the caricature truly cares about what they're doing. i was asked to do a charity fundraiser for chinese new year, which i refused, because it was obvious during the conversation that the woman wanted something for free, and yet she was getting paid, and it wasn't going back to the community. i didn't like that. one thing i'd suggest; do a nice cartoon of kids; i think exaggeration (like in a true caricature) is just uneccessary. you want everyone to feel better, after all!

If I ever did it, I would do a nice caricature. I thought it sounded like something the kids would really love and enjoy. I hadn't thought about the parents. That's a good idea, maybe give them a chance to smile a little too.
