you should start paying attention to the shape of the head this will improve you efforts, i´m shure! Examine first and then aply. Notice how she has a big forehead and a smalllllll chin, her shape is almost like a tennis ball. Hope this helped!

I just don't seem to be able to see what everyone else can. Well actually, i can see the shapes but I just can't translate them onto paper. So frustrating!

Thanks for the advice Horate. I don't understand what you mean when you say "synthese" though ? I'm having real trouble with the exaggeration. The second one I did last night (not posted yet due to scanner problems) isn't exaggerated either even though I intended to I don't think I'm cut out to do caricatures. Don't try to exaggerate - it's too soon. Just keep working on getting a likeness - the exaggeration skills will come in later. Keep an eye on whats obvious to you right now. The general head shape - long, short, round, angular... Eyes - big, squinty, close toghether... Nose - round, pointy, long, short... Mouth - big, open, closed, thin lips, huge, lips, close to the nose, close to the chin... The 3-feature rule - if you can get 3 MAIN features correct; then you will still have a likeness. So find the three most striking features and draw them well - if the rest is not as good you will still have a likeness. Hope this helps.

Thanks Frank, you've made me feel a bit more relaxed about it. I was starting to think I'd never be able to do it but I guess I've just got to give it more time and keep practising, which is what this challenge is about! Sketch 5: Danny Wallace (British writer, broadcaster, and generally lovely chap)

Okay, here are my entries for the week. First up is George Clooney, though when I showed it to my girlfriend, she said, "Oh! Is it Joe Mantegna?" So, suffice it to say, I'm not too pleased with this one. However, I will say that when I look at just the top of the drawing, like from mid-nose on up, I sorta see George. Anyway, here it is. Next up is Drew Barrymore. Well, kinda. I think she actually looks like a mixture of Drew and Kate Hudson, with a dash of my cousin Diana, but what are you gonna do? I will say, however, that coloring this one in actually helped quite a bit with the likeness, so if you think it's pretty bad, just imagine what it looked like before. Also, there's that stray line in the hair that I thought about editing out, but then was like, "Meh..." Next up is Donald Sutherland. Or, at least it's trying to be. This was another where the color actually did help quite a bit, but it's still not great. And then we have Neve Campbell. I really enjoyed the Scream movies, which is why we have two actors from the trilogy in this group of five this week. That's also why my screen name is what it is. It's from a quote in Scream 2. Anyway, I think this picture turned out okay. Not great, but not disgusting. Also, the Scream Ghost-Face Killer is supposed to be behind her, but instead it looks like she's imagining him in one of those "good angel/bad devil" moments. Also, it looks like he is balancing the knife on his palm instead of holding it. Oh, well. And finally, we have Jake Gyllenhaal. I actually think this one turned out pretty good. Don't have many comments on this one. I will say that I really need work on drawing girls. For some reason, I just seem to have big problems with that. I don't think it's the "subconciously trying to be nice" thing, either, because I know that they'll never see these, so their feelings won't be hurt. I just don't seem to have a knack for them. Also, all of these drawings were done with marker only. The coloring was art stix. But the thing is, normally, I sketch out with pencil, and go over in marker. However, because of last week's challenge, I decided to do just marker. Thank you, ToonMom; you inspired me to try something new. And finally, Lauren: don't give up. Keep doing what you're doing. You'll get better. We all do. Unless we stop trying, that is. Please feel free to comment on all these. Sorry this was so long. -- Eric

Life i prefer the lines than color technique, maybe better coloring with photoshop, anyway , your drawing are nice and with likeness. i have found this link that can help you in the way to give volumes with flat colors, and also see good caricatures. www.quepasa.com/espanol/cartoons/?cat=203on the right you search the theme...on categorias.

Thanks, horate. too bad that after three weeks of you suggesting I use color, it turns out, I'm not that great with color. I will say, however, that I've definately gotten better at using color; look at some of my other work as proof. That site was great, by the way. Lots of good stuff.
ToonMom, I forgot to mention this when I last posted. I really like your Indy. Your Saddam, however, I think should have had some coloration in the beard and hair. Looking at it with no lines of suggested color makes it look snow white, and at least for me, that throws the likeness off a bit.

Eric I know exactly what you mean about drawing women. I was pleased when I saw this challenge because it meant that I couldn't avoid drawing women for any longer.
I think it might be more difficult because men have stronger features, and also because women in the media tend to be beautiful and that's not always the case with men (see my first week 1 challenge - Stephen Fry is not exactly gorgeous!).
Edit: I like your Neve Campbell by the way.

I really like your work Eric and I'm glad the challenge is helping to push you along. Most people starting out tend to avoid drawing women, that's why I did this weeks challenge the way I did. I am trying to get you to try new things that are also helpful.
