Hi Everybody! I have seen a lot of questions about coloring
in Photoshop, and while there are hundreds of methods, I like to use this one.
It takes me about half an hour to color a drawing and there’s no messy paint
clean up! Also, for you newbies to photoshop,
this is so simple, you don’t need masking or any complicated filters.
REMEMBER: EACH LEVEL IS ON A SEPERATE LAYER!!
(step 1) I scan in my shaded pencil drawing
(step 2) I go to “image-brightness/contrast” and darken the picture till I get a medium grey
(step 3) I go to “image-adjustments-color balance” and change the grey to a purplish for shadows
(step 4) I pick a bright orange (or color of choice) and paint all of the face except the irises
(step 5) There is a bar in the layer box called “Opacity” I drop this layer’s opacity to 20%
(step 6) I pick a bright red for the blushing cheeks and such and brush it on
(step 7) I drop the opacity to 4%
(step 8) I use the same bright red for more intense blushes on the nose and ears
I would usually do a seperate level for the lips but in this photo, his lips were light
(step 9) I drop the opacity to 5%
(step 10) I pick white for the medium highlights and brush them on
(step 11) I drop the opacity to 7%
(step 12) I pick a bright blue for his punk rocker hair
(step 13) I drop the opacity to 29%
(step 14) I pick white again and brush on the more severe highlights on the nose
(step 15) I drop the opacity to 15%
(step 16) I pick a bright red for the irises and brush it on
(step 17) I drop the opacity to 43%
(step 18) I pick white again for the eyes and brush it on
(step 19) I drop the opacity to 36%
(step 20) I pick white again for the severe highlights in the eyes
(step 21) I drop the opacity to 57%
(step 22) All Done, except I added a few eye veins the same way
I listed the percentages of opacity I used for this SPECIFIC drawing. It’s easy to play with the opacity bar and you see the results immediately! Have Fun!
