i don't have any tutorials for you, just a few pointers, maybe... i've said a million times probably that you can't treat any one group of people all the same. many artists would probably tell you that you should always draw babies with big foreheads, little noses and big eyes. well, frankly, not all babies are made that way. if your main goal is to give the parents something to fawn over and say, "aaawwww, how cute!", then follow that formula, i guess. but if you're like me, you go for likeness first and foremost, and if it ain't a cute baby, i don't do a cute drawring. because in my mind, that's not what caricature is all about. that said, however, i've found most parents think even my rather distorted cadicatures are cute because the drawrings look like their babies, and all parents think their babies are the cutest kids in the world (except me. i know mine are). most babies do have big foreheads, big eyes and tiny noses, but not all. the one thing i can tell you that saves a baby caricature from looking grown up is: use fewer lines. i have learned (cuz mine always used to come out looking like adults too) not to define cheekbones or expression lines on babies too rigidly, and i usually try to make the outer face shape one continual line. hope this helps somewhat, cuz... it's all i've got!

I just finished drawing at a street festival, and I had to draw dozens of the little bug- um, darlings! don is right, there are some differences, but I find that generally, the face shape is very round, with a small chin, and a large forehead, and wide cheeks. eyes can vary, from those huge Disney types, to really small, and hiding in fat little cheeks. i use a thicker line for contouring the face shape, and thinner lines for the features, so that it looks light and delicate. i usually draw ears much larger, too, as most babies have that freakish Dumbo look to them. (can you tell I'm a little sick of drawing babies?). I don't draw the lines underneath the eyes, even though babies have a distinct undereye lid, because that makes them look older. Proportions are very different for a baby than a teenager; heads get smaller and features lengthen as we get older. don, i have to disagree with you on the caricature of a baby idea; I find it really difficult to do an authentic caricature of a baby, because they really don't have any distinctive features or character to their face yet. And, since Mommy and Daddy are the ones paying, you got to keep them happy...my baby drawings come out looking like a sketch, with big eyes, which makes parents happy (and I get paid!)

thanks corky for the tips - I'm sure the parents were very happy with the way their lil' bugg (I mean) cuties came out. Children can be very tricky. Don: thanks for your comments, tips, and advice. As always they are invaluable to us all. Ricky

Here's a drawing I did of my grand-nephew last November when he was about 15 months old; not a baby, but just barely a toddler.

Hi toonMom. Well, I'll agree that many of my attempts at caricatures look more like I was attempting a portrait rather than a caricature; that's something I just have to keep working on. But I can honestly say that is the ONLY one I was trying to do as a portrait rather than a caricature.
