Here are a couple of little tips that make a big difference in your drawings. -Always look for a way to create overlapping lines. This will give your drawing depth and dimension. Sometimes it is not obvious, however with practice you will eventually see opportunities to overlap lines. This should become second nature. -When overlapping make sure you look for tangents. Tangents are when any three lines in your drawing intersect with each other. See Illustration A. When you take the same drawing and insert proper overlapping, you will see a significant increase in dimension. See Illustration B. Overlapping creates the feeling that one form appears in front or behind another. Practice drawing one form in front of another with various shapes. This will help you draw more solid forms instead of just flat lines. See Illustration C. Even when drawing couples, overlapping comes into play. By placing the guy in front of the girl, you will create a sense of depth. See Illustration D. With a little bit of practice, you should be able to create dimensional overlapping in your drawings. Jack Hamm has a great section on this subject in his book, " Drawing the Human Figure". You can find his book at most local bookstore for about $8. Hope this is helpful to you...

Hi Mauri,
This was also a huge help for me. My early attempts at drawing always came out looking flat and cartoonish. Thanks for this.

Thanks for the tip:) I've been doing Digital art, and tangents never crossed my mind. I'll be sure to implement it:) That and in my regular drawings--on paper; walls, etc Mike

I was looking for something like this. Every thing I draw seems so flat. I'm sure this will help, once I master it.
